Artist Marjolaine Bourgeois will be the featured artist at the Aberdeen Cultural Centre’s 8th Annual Auction, held on Saturday March 30th at 7 PM. Three of her pieces will be auctioned, including Duel and Le jeu des dames.
A regular at the annual auction of the Aberdeen Cultural Center, the artistic practice of Marjolaine Bourgeois is manifested by the intersection of textile techniques and printmaking. Her work takes a critical, humorous and poetic look at the current omnipresence of consumption in society; by experimenting and adapting traditional techniques, she creates unusual but intriguing encounters between mediums. The three works she has chosen to auction off are perfect examples of her intersectional style. “I am honored to be the featured artist at this year’s auction, while thinking of many of my colleagues who deserve just as much. Working in the studio always brings me great pleasure. My work seems to be undergoing a momentum and is becoming more and more assertive, which pushes me to give myself bigger creative challenges. ” says Marjolaine Bourgeois. Duel and Le jeu des dames were created following a residency in Iceland and are part of a series entitled Embroidered Images. A third piece, Sonate for Blue Lobster, is being designed and will be unveiled during an exhibition of all the works from the auction on March 4th, 2019 on the 2nd floor of the center.
Since 2012, the annual auction has been the largest and most lucrative fundraiser for the Aberdeen Cultural Center. René Légère, Executive Director of the center, is pleased that Marjolaine has accepted the invitation and considers that her work is now recognized and appreciated by collectors. “Her work is simply spectacular and unique. I feel that the participants of this eighth edition of the auction will be delighted to discover the new works of Marjolaine.”
Nearly forty pieces will be auctioned off during the evening, including works by Alisa Arsenault, Angèle Cormier, Anne-Marie Sirois, Annie France Noël, Christian Brun, Dave Skyrie, Dolores Breau, Dominik Robichaud, Georges Goguen, Gilles LeBlanc, Herménégilde Chiasson, Jared Betts, Lionel Cormier, Julie Caissie, Luc Charette, Marc Blanchard, Mario Cyr, Nancy Schofield, Pauline Dugas, Raymond Martin, Remi Belliveau, Roméo Savoie, Sylvie Pilotte, Yvon Gallant , François Gaudet and Jacques Arseneault.
The event, which gathers around one hundred attendees each year, aims to raise $50,000 for the center and participating artists. Robert Basque and Geneviève Maltais will be the auction’s hosts, and Annie France Noël, artist and director of the Galerie Sans Nom, will describe the works. A total of 130 tickets will be issued for the event for $ 75 each. As is customary at the auction, the price of the ticket will be deducted for those who purchase pieces. Since the first edition of the auction, the Center has sold more than 250 works and generated over $400,000 in revenues for the Center and participating artists.
For the second year in a row, Chef Michel Savoie, Les Brumes du Coude restaurant, is offering a $160 package. The package includes a cocktail party at Les Brumes du Coude (starting at 5:00PM) with the featured artist and a ticket for the auction.

Biography of Marjolaine Bourgeois
Born in the Magdalen Islands, Marjolaine Bourgeois lives in Moncton, New Brunswick. In 1980, she graduated in printmaking and photography from the Department of Visual Arts at the Université de Moncton. Since 2011, her approach mainly combines printmaking and textiles. Marjolaine’s studio is located at the Aberdeen Cultural Center in Moncton and she is a member of the Imago Print Shop. She has participated in several events, as well as in individual and group exhibitions: among others, in 2013, at the International Symposium of Contemporary Art in Baie-Saint-Paul, QC (2016), at the International Triennial of Textiles Arts in Outaouais, QC . In the spring of 2019, she will participate in the Kunstitchting Biennale of Textile Arts in Belgium. In July 2017, she was attending a creative residency in Textilsetur, Blonduos, Iceland, and in the spring of 2019 she will be in residence at CanSerrat, El Bruc, Spain. Her work is part of several private collections as well as the NB Art Bank, MACBSP (Museum of Contemporary Art of Baie-Saint-Paul) and at the Galerie Louise and Reuben Cohen in Moncton.
Artistic approach
“My ideas emerge as much from the hand-made as from the manufactured object or found image. I question the superabundance and the obsolescence of the image and the object. I am intrigued by the perception we have and the use we make of it. With a critical, humorous or poetic glance, I compose assemblages in which the real and the unreal merge. The disparate, unusual, and even strange elements that meet there raise questions.
My recent practice combines printmaking with textile techniques. I am interested in these two techniques as much for their aesthetic qualities as for their symbolism, and their familiarity. Using both experimentation and traditional techniques, spontaneity and meditative gesture, I undo to redo, I use the reverse as the place, constantly seeking to reinterpret the forms and concepts of these two practices to which we are all intimately linked.
My work is sweet and bitter, expressing a critical view of the state of things, such as the environment in which we live and its impact on life. A hymn to the traditional work of women, my production is in constant relationship with time and creating. “
