About the Galerie Françoise-Chamard-Cadieux
Formerly known as Galerie du 2e, the Galerie Françoise-Chamard-Cadieux was inaugurated on April 15, 2021. By naming it after Françoise Chamard-Cadieux, the Centre culturel Aberdeen pays tribute to a remarkable Acadian woman who dedicated her life to the development of the French language and women’s rights in Acadie.
Alongside Angela Bourgeois, Françoise Chamard-Cadieux played a key role in establishing the first French-language high school in the Greater Moncton area. She was also part of the movement advocating for the creation of the New Brunswick Advisory Council on the Status of Women and the opening of the province’s first shelter for women experiencing violence in Moncton. A passionate advocate for the arts and culture, she saw the Centre culturel Aberdeen as an essential space for promoting artistic creation in Southeastern New Brunswick.
The Centre culturel Aberdeen acknowledges that it is located on the unceded traditional territory of the Wolastoqiyik and Mi’gmaq peoples. This territory is covered by the Peace and Friendship Treaties first signed with the British Crown in 1726. These treaties did not include any surrender of land or resources but instead recognized the title of the Mi’gmaq and Wolastoqiyik peoples and established the framework for lasting nation-to-nation relationships.
